STEWARDSHIP
One of the primary objectives of Renewed Hope is teaching not only the orphans but also the community to be self-reliant.
Initially, the community was encouraged to work together to provide for the needs of the orphans. A vegetable garden is maintained year round at Heather Chimhoga Orphan Care (HCOC). This was accomplished by the community planting, caring for and harvesting maize, pinto beans, sweet potatoes, etc.
More recently a poultry project was introduced at HCOC to help generate a bit of income. This project has gradually expanded to approximately 5,000 birds. Residue from the poultry along with vegetation from the fields is composted and used as fertilizer on the fields.
Gardens maintained at HCOC provide all of the vegetables for the feeding of approximately 1,000 hungry orphans. Excess is also sold at markets.
